Parthenon Athena, 1995

woodblock print and chine collé

30” x 44”

My woodblock prints of the goddess Athena were printed in the black and terracotta colors characteristic of Greek vase painting. The series lined the entry passageways of the Nashville Parthenon like a continuous frieze as part of my exhibition and installation there. A second variation of that image was printed in a brighter palette over maps and colorful tourist brochures from Nashville, a city which, for two centuries, has characterized itself as the Athens of the South. Inside the gallery space I hung a series of monotypes printed over a third variation of the Athena prints, images representing sculptural fragments from the pediments of the Parthenon in Athens.

Printed in collaboration with Jennie Schmidt.
